The New York Rangers are hoping that Mika Zibanejad won’t be out long term with his concussion. If he is, it could drastically affect their playoff chances.

If you thought the New York Rangers were weak at center a week ago, they are even thinner right now.

As we stand, there is no timetable for the team’s first line center Mika ZIbanejad to return from his concussion. It is almost impossible to come up with a timetable for somebody recovering from a head injury like he suffered. It is truly a case by case basis and the Rangers can’t rush him back and risk losing him down the stretch.

And without their top center  the team will lean on a tandem of Kevin Hayes, J.T. Miller who is more effective on the wing , David Desharnais and Boo Nieves down the middle. If Zibanejad is out long term, that center group is not exactly a recipe for success.

If the Rangers don’t go out and make a move for a middle six center in the near future and Zibanejad misses significant time, it might handicap how many points the Rangers can accumulate over the next month. With a three game stretch of Metropolitan Division foes beginning this week, the Rangers would be putting themselves in an awful position if they were to drop these games to teams they trail in the standings.

Related story Should we be worried about Anthony DeAngelo?

If the Rangers lose those divisional games– and go into a big slump over the next two months– they could be playing themselves out of contention pretty early in a stacked division.

And as I mentioned above, there is no indication that Zibanejad is gonna miss a significant amount of time. There is also no indication, at least as of yet, that things have gotten any better. Time will tell.

But if the Rangers do suffer without their budding star in the lineup, they could be playing themselves into trade deadline seller status for the first time in a long, long time.

In this instance, the team would ship off players on expiring contracts. This includes Rick Nash, Nick Holden, and Michael  Steven Kampfer Jersey Grabner who the team should re sign if you ask me . And at that point, the front office might deem it time to blow up the rest of the core—a longshot, but I suppose anything is possible.
